OnPoint Fire Weather Index

OnPoint Fire Weather Index (FWI) is a predictive wildfire risk scoring system powered by the globally respected Canadian FWI methodology — and driven by industry “gold standard” high-resolution weather forecast data.

It gives you a numerical score (0–100) that indicates the potential for fire ignition, spread and intensity, helping guide critical operational decisions such as Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) events, resource allocation and compliance planning.

What you get with OnPoint FWI

  • Location-specific wildfire risk rating on a simple standardized scale (0–100) – followed by the Canadian FWI
  • Unique daily FWI values for every location
  • Forecast window: Up to 14 days ahead
  • Refresh rate: Daily (based on 0z initialization observations)
  • Granular insights: Data at lat/long or postal code level
  • Custom thresholds: Combine FWI with your own triggers for temperature, humidity, wind, and other local factors
  • Flexible delivery: Available via Snowflake or S3
  • Easy integration: Works seamlessly with OMS, GIS, SCADA, and other risk management systems

Understanding the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index System

The Canadian FWI is based on:
Initial Spread Index (ISI): A numeric rating of the expected rate of fire spread through a pine stand (fuel type)
Buildup Index (BUI): A numeric rating of the total amount of fuel available for combustion

It combines key weather variables — temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and 24-hour precipitation — to produce one of the most skillful and widely used indicators for operational and climate-driven fire danger analysis worldwide, supported by peer-reviewed research and intergovernmental collaboration.

FWI Categories and Interpretation

CategoryFWI ValueMeaning
Low0 – 3.9Little or no risk. Fires may start but will spread slowly and are easy to control.
Moderate4-9.9Fires may start and spread in light fuels like grass or leaves. Some effort required to extinguish.
High10 – 16.9Fires start easily, spread rapidly, and may become difficult to control, especially in forested areas.
Very High17 – 22.9Fires spread very quickly, torching and crowning are possible; suppression is difficult.
Extreme≥ 23Fires will ignite and spread explosively. Direct attack is nearly impossible—major wildfires may develop.
Note: These sample FWI categories are for reference only. Each organization should define its own thresholds based on local fire-weather patterns, asset vulnerability, and historical risk.
